I need to fly out last minute for family issues. I am a grad student and teacher, hoping that would get me last minute discounts. Is there anyway of just showing up at the airport and getting on a standby list for a cheap fare? I will do whatever it take to pay $150 or less to get from Connecticut/New York to Ft. Lauderdale.
Please let me know if you can send some tips!
Thank you so much!
Tommy
These days it is really hard to find last minute flights at a cheap price. The best advice I can give is if your travel is flexible on dates, times and which airports are nearby that maybe a cheaper price. Some times if you can drive to a nearby airport you can save some money on your flight. It’s just a matter of searching travel sites and comparing prices. Remember many of the "major" travel sites are all owned by the same company (hence not much difference in prices) So always check as many sites as you can to see what’s out there!

The odds are slim to none of getting a last-minute fare that cheap — the price you’re looking to pay is actually less than the going rate for the cheapest fare on that route with a 7-day advance purchase (which, at about $145 plus tax, would cost about $180 with taxes and fees included). For a ticket purchased with less than 3 days’ notice, you’re looking at paying double what you’re willing to pay, at the very minimum, given the current published fares on the route.
Additionally, airlines do not offer last-minute standby seats anymore — that practice has become obsolete due to increased security concerns as well as a decrease in excess capacity that would require last-minute discounts to fill.
The best option you have right now to get something closer to what you’re willing to pay is to try placing a bid through Priceline or Hotwire. It’s not a guarantee that it will work (in that they may not accept a bid for as little as you’re willing to pay), but it’s one of the better chances you have. You could also try a travel agent that deals in last-minute travel (such as lastminute.com) or who deals in discounted travel for students (such as studentuniverse.com), but even then, those might not be enough at this point.
